Camberwell external exhibition at the Rag Factory

A few weeks ago I went to the Camberwell's BA Grafic Design external show at the Rag Factory mainly to have a nose around the space, since we were to have our show in the same venue.

It wasn't a surprise the show was very good and full packed, so luckily Jackie and I made sure to get early so we could actually see the work up.

We were the first to get to try a real fun piece that involved a cheese 80's beach poster background a fan to blow your hair and a Fujifilm instant camera. We also gave the photo a go in tryng to get some effects on in by folding it before it's fully exposed, somethig we used to do when dear polaroids were not as horribly difficult to get; it did sort of work, but I guess there is gonna have to be a lot experimentation to find good little instant and uncontrolled special effects before fuji instand films get my heart.  I have beeingtrying for ages to find the girl's who did this piece name, but seams impossible, she did not have a business card and the case for the photo she gave away with her email as only contact detail went missing... but I think her name was Sarah? ... no idea of surname... :(

The other piece I saw and which I consider my favourite in the show was 'Mechanicky Orgasmus' and very sexy video piece by Hellen Ralli. I found her work via Holy Ghost blog.

Animal Skulls ...

So time to catch up has come.. and is so exciting, there  is a little project  I'm doing some research for, still all in the air,  but it will involved a beautiful fashion collection,  some animal like pouses  maybe, the roof and corridors of the Art Deco building I'm currently living in hopefully.. and some bare skin with chunks of geometric minimalistic patterns perhaps....  trying to stop my head from wanting to put it all there and keep it suuuuper simple... but this stage is just my favorite, where everything you see seams to want take part of it.... so expect many images  coming for this project which for now I will simply call 'animal skulls'....

"More than 60 internationally renowned academics from across the globe have written to the dean of Middlesex University urging him to reverse the decision to close the philosophy department.

Alain Badiou, Judith Butler, Slavoj Žižek and Noam Chomsky were among those who condemned the decision.

Chomsky said he was "deeply disturbed to learn of the decision" and that he hoped it would be reversed "for the sake of the university, the intellectual life in the UK, and not least the future of this ancient and indispensible discipline worldwide".

Michael Hardt, from Duke University in North Carolina, US, said: "I can think of no other philosophy department in the US, UK, or Australia that rises to the level of Middlesex [in the study of continental philosophy]."

Idris Khan creates multi-layered photos, often of appropriated art and books, in a way that both augments the aura of the original and reveals the idiosyncratic trace of his own hand. Khan’s work explores the history of photography and literature, the beauty of repetition and the anxieties of authorship. “it’s obviously not about re-photographing the photographs to make exact copies, but to intervene and bring a spectrum of feelings – warmth, humour, anxiety – to what might otherwise be considered cool aloof image.  You can see the illusion of my hand in the layering.  It looks like a drawing.  It’s not systematic or uniform.  The opacity of every layer is a different fallible, human decision”. Idris Khan graduated with an MA in Fine Art from the Royal college of Art in 2003.......

Yes, I think that massive frame and opaque plexiglass sitting at the back of my sofa is wanting to come out and play.... we'll bring some paint too...

What you are looking at are photographs viewed through silk screened Plexiglas. I take the photos with a 4 x 5 color negative and make a traditional c-print. Then I use Rapidograph ink to trace trees from the image on a sheet of Frosted Mylar. From this Rapidograph drawing, I expose the silkscreen and use translucent white ink to make silkscreen prints of trees on the Plexiglas. This process gives the work a little bit of a 3D effect.

May be I can use a similar process to solve the nightmares I've been having with my painting. I'm thinking of the transparency I got on the Draft paper on the areas where I applied varnish... play with ths 3d mentionality and glass? ... although my glass box is still not looking any good..hmmm
